First Generation in Australia

William Toleman was born in Bridgeport, England, the son of John Toleman (a labourer) and Hannah Gill. He married Mary Ann Norman (a housemaid) and in 1841 they migrated to Australia aboard the Gilmore. William was 23 years at the time and he could not read or write (his name was listed as Tomin). Mary Anne was 21 years when they came to Australia, and she could read but not write. William worked as a farmer and the family lived at Mortlake and Donald. William was 59 years when he died on the 19th January 1878 at Donald, after his cart capsized.

Second Generation (William)

William Toleman was born on the 10th June 1845 at Spring Creek, Victoria, Australia. He married Sarah McKenzie (also known as Marion) McKenzie on the 23rd May 1866 at Ararat, Victoria. His occupation was a herdsman on Mortlake Common. William died aged 46 years on the 7th June 1891 at Mortlake, Victoria.

  3. Isabella was born in 1870 and married John Oborne. They lived in Colac. Children are (not necessarily in order):
    1. William George Oborne was born c 1894. He enlisted in WW1 in the 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion in 1914 and was killed in action in Belgium on the 4th October 1917. He was 23 years of age. He was buried on Brooksiend Ridge, Zonnebeke by his comrades. His memorial is at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. Service Number: 6415.

  7. Jessica Agnes, born 1876. She lived with Abraham Cramp for some time and later married H Williams.
    1. Her son Kenneth Toleman was born in 1892 and was bought up by his grandmother Marion Toleman. He moved to Hamilton as a young man and was active in sports and the firebrigade. In 1914 he enlisted with the 6th Reinforcements, 14th Battalion 1st AIF, became and officer, and was later transferred to the 46th Battalion 1st AIF. He died as a result of war injuries on 19th Nov 1916 in Belgium and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Lijssenthoek, Flanders, Belgium.

Second Generation (Mary-Ann)

Mary Ann Toleman was born in 1854 and married Henry Goldsmith (born 1848). Mary died in 1833 and Henry died in 1925.
